 Cooper- in Maine

Posted March 2025

Cooper is a sweet love who is coming back into our rescue due to some changes in his human family that leave him home alone for too long. He’s ready to find a new place to lay his head and a new family to share his love with.

Cooper LOVES people – he will follow you from one room to another and will go outside if you do, so as not to miss anything! He is happy and playful and loves to cuddle. He is a little bit goofy in his behaviors, like he tries to get through a door with his face first and doesn’t seem to have good body awareness, he will also run into the back of your legs before stopping, so a home with very little kids or an unsteady senior will not be the best match. If you are sick, he will wrap you up in cuddles.

When first adopted, Cooper had some trouble accepting human touch but that has gotten slowly better, but may take a little time in a new group of humans. Once you are in his “inner circle”, he will come up to you sideways and press his neck into you so you will love on him!

Cooper is very funny with the family’s cat. He acts like he doesn’t know what to do with her when she comes up to him but then if she turns to run away he will bark at her and startle her, then wag his tail like he’s a good and smart boy ; o ) He enjoys playing with the family’s goats and will chase them to their pen, and then they chase him back. He will chase the chickens to make them flap their wings and then he walks away happy. He loves to try and play with the older dog in the home but she doesn’t give him much time of day. He will sit on her or bring  her toys to entice her to play tug.

Cooper sleeps in a kennel at night but free roams in the living room when the family is not at home. If he stays alone too long he may grab a shoe but doesn’t eat it.

Cooper gets anxious around strangers. When he gets scared he hides in his kennel which is his safe place. He knows it as his “bed” and follows a command to go to his bed. He will “talk” or howl to you to get your attention. Part of his nervousness seems to be licking people, himself and things (the chair, other dog, his blanket), sometimes nibbling with his front teeth but he can be redirected.

Cooper has been trained with an invisible fence collar so he is used to having free range outdoors, but doesn’t like to stay out alone so he comes back in to be with his humans. Riding in cars is hard for him. He will happily jump in but then will be nervous throughout the ride. He is nervous on stairs, and some new walking places are hard for him.

This boy is full of energy and love. He loves kids that are respectful and don’t move too fast or make too much of a ruckus. Things like boxes will make him nervous.

Cooper gets itchy ears and may have allergies so the family and vet are working to identify that.

One of our volunteers recently met Cooper and just loved him. He was in a crate when she arrived and he became very wiggly and excited to meet her. She allowed him to do the initiating and he did well with that and appreciated some nice petting and attention and then he went and sat down in another part of the room. Cooper is 4.5 years old and weighs 59 lbs. He is listed as a "mixed breed" dog, we see at least yellow lab in there.

If you are interested in Cooper or any of our sweeties, please fill out the adoption application.

Please note: We do not have a physical facility where the dogs are housed; they are cared for in our wonderful foster network throughout New England and it is our expectation that, once approved, a potential family will meet the dog(s) in the foster setting where they are feeling safe and loved.
